Michelangelo Antonioni, 94, on Monday, same as Bergman.

Bergman and Antonioni.  Contrast and compare.

  1. I have to say I’m a Truffaut, Godard, Renoir guy myself. Although the Magic Flute movie is really wonderful, even if the alterations in the order of things in the second act isn’t so good (however understandable–who really cares about whether Tamino and Pamina overcome their trials and find enlightment once Papageno gets Pagagena?

  2. “Didn’t Antonioni not use music in his films after L’Aventura?”

…nope there’s a jazz combo in La Notte, wierd experimental stuff in Il Deserto Rosso, the Yardbirds play in Blow Up, and a whole melange of psychodelic groups/people added music to Zabriskie Point.

Sad to lose Antonioni as well as Bergman, although I had thought Antonioni was long overdue since his horrible stroke in the 80’s.
