Congratulations are in order to Joan Tower and our friends at Naxos for nearly running the table on the classical music goodies in last night’s Grammy love fest. Tower’s Made in America (Leonard Slatkin, conductor; Nashville Symphony Orchestra) won Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. I think it sounds like something written in 1939 which shows you what I know.

Record of the year and song of the year (Rehab) went to the sad junkie from London with the unsightly tattoos. Regretably, it will probably be her last.

  1. I also like the ‘Jaws’ quote. The pervious comment about symphony orchestra players being messed up is a bit of a sweeping generalization, although beta-blockers, etc. are undoubtably a problem.

  2. Well, she is a junkie and she may or may not get enough vegetables in her diet (we may never know). What’s to debate or get angry over? No one’s calling her a whore or cursing her bloodline.

  3. Just how much time do you spend scouring the internet for blog posts to overreact to? Suggesting that Ms. Winehouse does not look like the paragon of health doesn’t seem to entitle you to cuss out the zookeeper of this site.

  4. Not sure that on the basis of a single album the troubled Miss Winehouse falls into such exalted company, Chris, but she clearly is an original and her cover of \”There is No Greater Love\’ is something even us old farts can appreciate. I wasn\’t really dissing her–God knows it took me about 40 years to stop being a drunk. Simply observing that she looks like someone who probably isn\’t getting enough vegetables in her diet.

Delighted that Herbie won Best Album with River:The Joni Letters. I think I mentioned here a few months ago that Tina Turner\’s cover of Edith and the Kingpin from the album is revelatory You can hear it here. Also love Corinne Bailey Rae\’s version of River.

  5. And props to her for an awesome winning reaction face. She looked more genuinely surprised and excited than anybody I’ve seen win in a while.

  6. …not to mention all of the alcoholic, overweight and/or drug addicted composers I’ve encountered in my 39 years on the planet. Some of the most f—ed up junkies I’ve personally met played in symphony orchestras or chamber groups.

    Leave Amy alone!!! Bastard.
