Thanks for sharing this post. It's nice to read stories that speak of growth in the shadow of such tragedy. I find the observation of the student that you shared to be poignant and interesting. There is something about music that makes the comment particularly significant. Music is an inherently communal art form. And so, if you treat someone like an outsider, we can't come together as a community and can't create music the way we should. In music making we have to all come together as ensemble members, composers, audience members, conductors, etc. in order to form the community in which music lives as music and not as mere sound in time. There is something in music that reflects our humanity as social beings. Hopefully music will be able to play some small role in curing our homophobia, cyberbullying, etc.

Thanks again for this post.

After 23 years in juvenile court, I learned that teenagers often learn from the experiences of their peers, not just from being lectured by those in authority. Consequently, “Teen Cyberbullying Investigated” was published in January, 2010. Endorsed by Dr. Phil on April 8, 2010 ["Bullied to Death" show] TCI presents real cases of teens in trouble over their online and cell phone activities. Civil & criminal sanctions have been imposed on teens over their emails, blogs, text and IM messages, Facebook entries and more. TCI is interactive and promotes education & awareness so that our youth will begin to “Think B4 U Click.” Thanks for looking at “Teen Cyberbullying Investigated” on http://www.freespirit.com [publisher] or on http://www.askthejudge.info [a free website for & about teens and the law].
