How times have changed at University of Michigan! I recall a composition lesson ca. 1981-82 I had with Bill Albright, interrupted by the then chair of the piano department (Charles Fisher?) The chair was puzzled by Last Pieces by Feldman, which one of his students wanted to perform, and the chair had absolutely no idea how to play the piece. (It was over 20 years old at that point, and considered an important piano work of the avant-garde).

Be sure to ask Gordon Mumma and company what it was like to try to play the music they wrote and admired at the School of Music. They met with so much resistance! Now to learn that the Chair of the Piano dept. is playing his music--I salute you, University of Michigan School of Music!
