What evidence is there that Ruggles was quoting the Bartok? The material in common is fairly generic in quality and, with the first (and fairly obscure) recording of the Bartok being made only in 1949 (by the Los Angeles Chamber Symphony under Harold Byrns), it is unlikely that Ruggles would have heard the piece. He might have owned the score, which was published in Vienna in 1937, but only then if he had a copy that had been imported soon after publication.

We should note that this recording, originally released on Columbia LPs in 1980, is the first reissue on CD of this classic two-LP collection. Also, that the original program notes from Columbia are supplemented by Lou Harrison's lengthy and lucid article (from 1947) on the significance of Ruggles' oeuvre. Other Minds is delighted by the many favorable critical notices about the reissue. Thanks to Mr. Lakeland for his notice on Sequenza21. Charles Amirkhanian, Executive Producer, Other Minds Records (webstore.otherminds.org is a good place to purchase this release)
