The point the Mr. Mitt Romney was trying to say is we,(United States) are in tremendous debt to China. He was just trying to say that most of the public funding has donations, fundraisers and auctions. They are able to generate income and funding on their own. With our deficeit so out of control as our economy, then making cuts where we can would only make sense. That is the United States problem now, We bail out and fund those who can actually help themselves!

In context, U.S. debt to China is now decreasing and public funding often provides funding leadership. Do you believe that there would be new opera in America if the matter were solely left up to the cultural preferences of today’s oligarchs? Do you believe that U.S. foundations would support culture as well as the health and environmental sciences if not — today — for public funding? (True, in the 1950s, the Ford Foundation supported high culture prior to John F. Kennedy’s call for public funding of the arts in the 1960s.)

I think the whole context was taken out of this fiasco. Romney’s main concern was that our country is in debt to China for a phenomenal price and we are still giving funds to programs that can easily generate their own funding. I hope America will get off the one phrases and continue on to the main issues. Use the phrases in the correct context.
