Summer ad Parnassum (4th species: Dorian)

4th Species Above Cantus

What I like: This is my first one out of the gate and it turned out okay. Just okay. I don’t ever recall doing 4th species exercises before, I think we always glossed over these and just talked about how suspensions work.

What I don’t like: LOTS of errors, I feel. I arpeggiate through a triad but stop at the octave. There are several times that I leap a fourth but don’t compensate the leap in order to resolve the suspension.

4th Species Below Cantus

What I like: Much better. No awkward leaps, everything get compensated/resolved as they should.

What I don’t like: There is a sense of predestination here that I do not like. The ties are like handcuffs that severely restrict what I can and cannot do. These are more like puzzles than the previous species. There are fewer choices to make.
