Summer ad Parnassum (4th Species: Lydian)

4th Species Above Cantus

What I like: Maybe it is the serialist in me talking, but I like the wedge of 5-4-3-2-1 in the first few measures. I like arriving on the E in measure 6, too, only to top out on the F at the end.

What I don’t like: Again, I don’t like this overwhelming sense of predestination. I don’t feel like there is much creativity involved here. This particular species is so strict that they pretty much write themselves.

4th Species Below Cantus

What I like: The contour is good and I loves me some ficta!

What I don’t like: Still feel like the options are much more limited and less satisfying that in previous species. Why do this highly restricted stuff now when the next species is free composition? This strict method seems to be more constrained than first species. It would be easy to grade, though.
