Summer ad Parnassum (4th Species: Mixolydian)

4th Species Above Cantus

What I like: This one is pretty mundane, save for the m6 leap in measure 9. I’m always happy when I can arpeggiate a triad that isn’t on tonic.

What I don’t like: Too much descending stepwise motion all between A and E in the first 2/3rd of this. It is hard to avoid in this style, though.

4th Species Below Cantus

What I like: There is something about these below counterpoints that just seem to work easier for me. This one has better shape, more variety of motion, and I even got to squeeze out some emergency ficta! Sweet.

What I don’t like: I’ve got a LOT of weak beat 5ths here. The Fux says that they are okay and aren’t considered parallel 5ths but I think this one goes overb0ard. I feel dirty.
