Metro Chamber Orchestra closes its season with an eclectic program of premieres, rarities, and exciting works for chamber orchestra

NEW YORK – The acclaimed Metro Chamber Orchestra – led by maestro Phil Nuzzo – returns to Symphony Space to end its successful concert season with a program of diverse works, including the premiere of the new Clarinet Concerto, by MCO’s composer-in-residence Sean Hickey. The three-movement work, collaboratively commissioned by soloist David Gould and the orchestra, DANSR Inc. and Vandoren, receives its premiere here. Hickey’s Billboard-charting disc on Naxos, Left at the Fork in the Road, featuring Gould among numerous others, has received considerable acclaim. In reviewing one of the works on the disc featuring Mr. Gould, Gramophone wrote, “Fools Errand packs a wealth of material into a three-minute masterpiece.”

Also on the program is a rare performance by one of the most talked-about composers of today. Jennifer Higdon’s Soliliquy is here presented in a special transcription by cellist Kate Dillingham, for cello and string orchestra. Ms. Dillingham will be performing the solo role. She premiered the work in Russia and performed it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005

Lastly, the Metro Chamber Orchestra presents the world premiere performance of Hector Berlioz’ Les Nuits d’ete, in the orchestration by David Matthews. Celebrated soprano Sherry Zannoth sings these passionate utterances of the great French master. Among her numerous accolades, Opera News said, “Sherry Zannoth’s spellbinding technique made the fiendish role of Verdi’s Lady Macbeth sound easy. From secure top to solid bottom, her unusual voice as seamless as the music allowed.” Ms Zannoth’s Metropolitan Opera debut was in Kurt Weill’s The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahoganny.
