Helmut Lachenmann Toccatina (1986)

Keeril Makan Mu for prepared violin (2007)
Mario Davidovsky Synchronisms No. 9 for violin and electronic sound (1988)

Jennifer Choi has charted a career that breaks through the conventional boundaries of solo violin, chamber music, and the art of creative improvisation. As fearless about championing the avant-garde and experimental music as she is traversing between genre lines, she is establishing herself as a diverse violinist of the 21st century. The New York Times has described her playing with the words “brilliance and command,” the Seattle Weekly applauded her “intense, spectacularly virtuosic play,” and the Boston Globe reported that as “a leading New York new music violinist, Jennifer Choi play[s]… with fiery authorityâ€.
KIRK KNUFFKE TRIO
Thu Mar 19 – 8:30 PM
“A trumpeter of open-ended perspective” (The New York Times), Kirk Knuffke is both a composer and musician with a wide appreciation for jazz artists of varying styles and periods, which is demonstrated in his distinctive, honest, and diverse sound. Â A student of jazz greats such as Ornette Coleman, Art Lande and Ron Miles, Knuffke currently leads his own groups, including the Kirk Knuffke Quartet and a Sextet with Butch Morris. Â Tonight’s concert will premiere all new compostions commisioned by the Jerome Foundation Composer’s Grant, with the debut of his all new trio featuring Doug Wieselman.
WU FEI w/ BILLY MARTIN: Tremble and Quake
Fri Mar 20 – 8:30 PM
Guzheng experimentalist/vocalist Wu Fei has worked with the likes of John Zorn, Fred Frith, Erik Friedlander, Elliott Sharp, and Cecil Taylor. A native Beijinger now based in Brooklyn, the artist-composer will unfurl acoustic vignettes for guzheng (ancient Chinese zither) and voice, including music from her latest album of chamber works entitled “Yuan”. Billy Martin, who joins Fei this evening, has firmly established himself as a tasteful dispenser of soulful, groove music as well as a highly innovative sound artist and adventurous solo performer. Always a marvelous collaboration, the journey undertaken by these two is one of allure and revelation.

CHRIS MANN, LISA FAY, JEFF GLASSMAN
Mon Mar 23 – 8:30 PM
Lisa Fay and Jeff Glassman create short, dense and troublesome compositions; Each one, in some way, pries apart a relation in theatre between movement and text, sound and gesture, rhythm and character, and plants a new technique in the opening. Tonight they team up with Chris Mann, a composer working in Compositional Linguistics, mainly to do with the technology and philosphy of speech.
