RED LIGHT NEW MUSIC PERFORMS MUSIC BY
MORTON FELDMAN AND BEAT FURRER
WITH FILMS BY BADY MINCK
New Chamber Music at the Chelsea Art Museum
April 10, 2009 at 7:00pm
New York, NY, Contemporary music series Red Light New Music presents a concert of chamber music by two great composers of the last fifty years, Morton Feldman and Beat Furrer. Violist Erin Wight and pianist Yegor Shevtsov will perform Feldman’s Last Pieces and The Viola in My Life (III). Ms. Wight and Mr. Shevtsov will be joined by flutist Natacha Diels and pianist David Broome to perform three works by Swiss-Austrian composer Beat Furrer. Furrer’s music, strongly influenced by Feldman, is characterized by its complex but alluring textures combining elements of the European avant-garde and American minimalism. Each of these composers have been hugely influential on a generation of young composers. In addition, the concert will feature a rare screening of the work of Luxembourgian filmmaker Bady Minck, who has crafted elegant and beautiful films around music by these two composers.
About Red Light New Music:
“Not all young composers have a yen for pop; many still engage in the venerable avant-garde pursuit [...] thus striking an attitude of resistance to mainstream culture. Composer-led groups such as … the Red Light New Music Ensemble are active at the noisier end of the spectrum, although they don’t rule out sweeter sounds.” Alex Ross, The New Yorker
Red Light New Music is a non-profit, New York-based contemporary music series and ensemble dedicated to the presentation of new classical music. Now in its fourth season, Red Light is passionate about the presentation of music by younger composers and has commissioned composers from countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Sweden and the United States and performed them in venues from New York to Louisville to Charleston to Berlin.
