JShatinPhotoNew York, NY,Judith Shatin’s And How My Brother Is Cain will be performed by the University of Virginia Chamber Singers, Michael Slon, conductor on Friday, November 20, 8:00 PM at Old Cabell Hall on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Piano accompanist will be David Norfrey.

And How My Brother Is Cain is an excerpt from the composer’s Songs of War and Peace (SATB+piano). The text is of four poems by major Israeli poets chosen by Ms. Shatin, with translations by outstanding American ones, on the ongoing topic of war and peace. She writes, “I chose poems collected in the compelling book After the First Rain, a title which, in colloquial Hebrew, also means “After the Shooter.” More about the complete work at http://www.judithshatin.com/detail.php?compid=33.

The concert will also feature works of Samuel Barber, Randall Thompson, Stephen Sondheim, Aaron Copland, James Mulholland and Forrest Pierce, along with projections of visual art accompanying the music.
