Build is a Brooklyn-based indie-classical band led by composer/violinist Matt McBane which Steve Smith described in Time Out New York as “a new quintet that straddles the increasingly permeable line between chamber music and instrumental rock.” Build released its self-titled debut album on New Amsterdam Records in the summer of 2008 to critical acclaim from both esteemed classical music critics and indie bloggers alike including Bloomberg News’ Alan Rich who praised its “skittery, unpredictable and utterly charming musical inventions”. Tracks from the album are regularly used as musical interludes on NPR’s All Things Considered. Recent and upcoming performances include the Chelsea Art Museum (NYC), Joe’s Pub (NYC), UCSD’s ArtPower! (San Diego), the Carlsbad Music Festival (San Diego), Zipper Hall (LA), and the 2009 Bang on a Can Marathon from which their performance was selected as a highlight for WNYC’s New Sounds by John Schaeffer.
The George Hurd Ensemble performs the music of Chicago-turned-San Francisco composer George Hurd, combining classical chamber instruments with laptop for live performance. This project grows directly out of his lifelong love of both classical and electronic music, weaving elements of his computer-generated pieces and his score work for film. The end result is an attempt to join organic with synthetic, ancient and modern, traditional and experimental, to form a style that epitomizes the world we live in today. Joined by some of SF’s most talented local musicians, the Ensemble is an ever-changing group with different permutations based on what city it lands in. Performances include pieces that are strict chamber music without electronics, pure electronic music with only Hurd performing on laptop, and a combination of both.
The Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble, a groundbreaking new music ensemble led by classical and film composer Jack Curtis Dubowsky, combines acoustic instruments, electronic hardware, composed material and structured improvisation. The Ensemble treats analog synth as a rare and unpredictable performance instrument. The Ensemble’s contemporary electroacoustic music, abstract, calm, spacious, free form, and transcendental, is performed and recorded live with no overdubs or sequencing.
Classical Revolution is more than an ensemble.
Classical Revolution is more than a presenting organization.
Classical Revolution is a global phenomenon, revolutionizing the way live classical music is programmed and heard.
The idea which took shape in November of 2006 at Revolution Cafe in San Francisco’s Mission District is now represented in over a dozen cities on three continents. Classical Revolution presents an average of 15-20 performance events each month in the Bay Area alone. Residencies are held at Revolution Cafe, SoCha Cafe, Amnesia, Caffe Divino (Sausalito), Bazaar Cafe, and the Red Poppy Art House. Classical Revolution has been featured in various publications including San Francisco Classical Voice, SF Weekly, SF Chronicle, Sunset Magazine, SOMA Magazine, Strings Magazine, and The New York Times.
