Flutist Laura Falzon together with cellist Matthew Goeke and pianist Yvonne Troxler will be performing a program of 20th century and contemporary works on Tuesday November 24th at St. Paul’s Chapel as part of Columbia University’s Music at St. Paul’s concert series. The concert will feature American composer David Shohl’s The Distant Bell written in memory of composer Otto Luening and Bruno Maderna’s Serenata per un satellite, both for flute, cello and piano. Italian composer Bruno Maderna dedicated this work to Umberto Montalenti, the director of the European Operative Center for Space Research in Darmstadt, Germany, where satellite “Boreas” was launched in 1969. Also on the program are Frank Martin’s Ballade for flute and piano, Charles Camilleri’s The Flower & the wind for solo flute, Jacob Ter Veldhuis The body of your dream for piano & boom box, Messiaen’s Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus from Quatuor pour la fin du temps for cello & piano, and Robert Nessler’s Les poissons magiques for flute & cello.

All three performers are known for their performances of concerts which include creative programming of new works by both American, European and other composers. They have all worked with many composers and commissioned and premiered many works.

Flutist Laura Falzon has featured as soloist during recitals and concerts across Europe, Asia and the USA. She has collaborated with many composers on new works for flute in a variety of combinations, ranging from the conventional flute solo and flute with piano or orchestra, to works with electroacoustics as well as non-western instruments like the zheng, tabla, yoruba drums and tanpura. Composers who have written for her include the British composer John Mayer (mostly known as the founder of Indo-Jazz Fusion and, in the flute world, for his flute Concerto for Sir James Galway), Scottish composer Eddie McGuire, American composer Shirish Korde, Maltese composer Charles Camilleri and English composer Geoff Poole. Described in the London-based Music & Musicians magazine as “an excellent instrumentalist”, she has been described in PAN, the Journal of the British Flute Society, as “fearless in tackling and promoting” contemporary music”. Cellist Matthew Goeke, peforms as soloist, chamber musician and orchestra player in a broad range of musical styles. He is a member of, amongst others,Satellites, Bells & Fish the Stamford Symphony and The School of American Ballet Orchestra, and has performed with SEM Ensemble, Musica Sacra, Eos Orchestra and The Orchestra of St. Lukes, North/South Consonance, and the Kitchen House Blend. He performs and records with the bands, GIANTfingers and Voltaire, and the experimental instrumental group Another Silent Day and is a member of the di.vi.sion piano trio, Moderncelli Cello Quartet, Glass Farm ensemble and the award winning flute, viola cello trio, Eight Strings and a Whistle.

Pianist Yvonne Troxler has performed throughout the United States and Europe. She is the director of the Glass Farm Ensemble, which she founded in 2000 [www.glassfarm.org]. Troxler has premiered numerous works by established and emerging composers including Toshio Hosokawa, Elizabeth Hoffman, Peter Herbert, Wolfgang Heiniger, Rebecca Saunders, and Balz Trümpy. Her playing has received her critical acclaim as the Neue Zürcher Zeitung writes “…one could experience the fiery temperament of her interpretation… (Yvonne Troxler) plays with a soft touch, warm sonority and always delicate use of dynamic shading.”
