Shostakovich Elegy for Solo Viola by Steven R. Gerber Presented on February 23 in Paris, France

Steven R. Gerber’s Elegy on the Name ‘Dmitri Shostakovich’ for solo viola will be presented by Matthew Jones on Tuesday, February 23, 7:00 PM at Atelier de la Main d’Or, located at 9 passage de la Main d’Or in Paris, France. Other composers on the recital include Fyodor Druzhinin, Hillary Tann, Matthew Hindson, Paul Patterson, J.S. Bach and Miklos Rozsa.
Mr. Gerber has written this about his work, “Elegy on the Name ‘Dmitri Shostakovich’ (1991) was written for the Russian violist Elena Ozol…She asked me to write a work for solo viola, and since Shostakovich was her favorite composer I decided one day to play around with the letters of Shostakovich’s name and came up with two motifs that I liked…I was very pleased when one violist who played the piece told me that at that moment it sounded to her as if Shostakovich himself were coming out of the grave.”
