On Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., Cadillac Moon Ensemble presents “History as Storytelling”, at Christ and St. Stephen’s Church in Manhattan. CME will be joined by guest violinist Leila Nassar‐Fredell.

History and storytelling are treated in various and creative ways throughout this program. With Quimbombó, Negrón interweaves distant personal history and deconstructs traditional Afro‐Caribbean rhythmic and melodic cells with associations in the title to a Puerto Rican stewed okra dish. Travis Weller’s Northwest Passage evokes sixteenth century sea battles as well as “the boat that set fire to the ocean”, the title of the third movement, which is the last line of a poem by Noah Gershman. In Moon Thrust, Zack Browning’s compositional worlds of Western popular music (Van Morrison’s “Moondance”) collide with the Magic Square of the Moon and feng shui that represents the performers’ lives. Erich Stem’s Revisited explores ancient Japanese musical traditions in the form of shakuhatchi idioms, placed side-by-side with American Jazz and Stem’s unique compositional voice. Barbara Kolb’s Extremes deals with the Appollonian‐Dionysian duality of extreme opposites in musical material.
