Free 7-Hour Marathon to Open Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Concert Hall on January 17, 2011

Merkin Concert Hall’s Ecstatic Music Festival kicks off on Monday, January 17, 2011 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), 2-9, pm with a free 7-hour marathon featuring artists appearing later in the festival along with special guests.
Program highlights include headliners Buke and Gass with Victoire, a rare performance of Julius Eastman’s “Stay On It” with Ne(x)tworks; the U.S. premiere of John Matthias, Adrian Corker and Andrew Prior’s new work for violin, voice, electric guitar, piano and NeuroSampler, “what happens”; the second-ever New York performance of Corey Dargel’s complete “Other People’s Love Songs” with NOW Ensemble; and the Chiara String Quartet performing Jefferson Friedman’s String Quartet No. 3.

A panel discussion with Ecstatic Music Festival artists will take place on Sunday, January 16, 2011, 7 pm at the Apple Store on Broadway at 67th Street. Moderated by Nadia Sirota, the panel will include Dan Deacon, Nico Muhly, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Missy Mazzoli and Tristan Perich. Admission is free.
Merkin Concert Hall’s Ecstatic Music Festival
The 15-concert Ecstatic Music Festival (January 17-March 28, 2011) showcases a new generation of composers and performers drawing on multiple influences and creating new work that seamlessly blends classical and popular music. Each concert in the festival features collaborations between artists from different musical backgrounds exploring the fertile terrain between genres. These collaborations include composers Nico Muhly and Valgeir Sigurðsson with the Chiara String Quartet; Owen Pallett with Nadia Sirota and Thomas Bartlett (Doveman); Clogs with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus; electronic iconoclast Dan Deacon with So Percussion; tUnE-yArDs, William Brittelle and Caleb Burhans with Roomful of Teeth; a Ben Frost arrangement for Alarm Will Sound; Vijay Iyer with Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society; Darcy James Argue with Newspeak and many others. All of the concerts will include premieres. The Ecstatic Music Festival is curated by Judd Greenstein and presented in association with New Amsterdam Records.
