American composer Judith Lang Zaimont’s Astral…a mirror life on the astral plane for solo violin will be presented as part of Women in Music on March 24 – 8:00 PM at Wilmot Recital Hall on the campus of Nazareth College, 4245 East Avenue in Rochester, New York. The piece will be performed by Anyango Yarbo Davenport.
Astral is largely unmetered, and its varying segments call upon high degrees of both technical and expressive prowess from the soloist. The emotional trajectory of this eight-minute+, contemplative movement is roughly equivalent to one very long phrase. Read the complete notes about it at http://www.jzaimont.com/works/chamber/chamber_music.html#astral. The piece is also available for solo clarinet, solo alto saxophone and solo viola and is published by Jeanné, Inc. – http://www.jeanne-inc.com/.
Other works on the program include Michaela Eremiášová’s Emblems for large chamber ensemble, Kristen Shiner McGuire’s Colors of Earth and Sea for marimba, Johanna Eränkö’s Caprice Finnois for solo violin, Hilary Tann’s Nothing Forgotten for piano trio and Shakkei: Diptych for soprano saxophone and small orchestra and Imogen Holst’s The Fall of the Leaf for solo cello.
Other solo and small ensemble performers will include Kristen Shiner McGuire, marimba, Sini Virtanen, violin, Andrew Barnhart, cello; Eun Mi Ko, piano and Chien-Kwan Lin, soprano saxophone.
