Adventurous L.A. classical ensemble Wild Up makes its REDCAT debut May 17, teaming up with CalArts musicians for the culmination of CalArts’ festival of Sofia Gubaidulina’s music. Twenty Wild Up players join 60 more musicians from CalArts to present experimental Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina’s magum opus, Offertorium – a deconstructionist violin concerto tribute to Bach, death and resurrection.

“We’re really excited about this concert because of the beauty of the music, the space we’re playing it in, and the collabration with CalArts,” said Wild Up’s conductor and music director, Christopher Rountree. “And because it’s going to be really, really loud.”

The group will be joined by the riveting violinist Mark Menzies. Known for his unique interpretations and virtuoso performance of new music, he is a favorite of Gubaidulina’s.

About Wild Up:

wild Up is a 24-member experimental classical/contemporary ensemble comprised of Los Angeles musicians committed to creating visceral, thought-provoking happenings. The group, led by artistic director and conductor Christopher Orion Rountree, unites around the belief that no music is off limits, and that a concert space should be as moving as the music heard in it: small, powerful and unlike anything else. Wild Up projects bring people together, defy convention and address the need for heart-wrenching, mind-bending experiences.
