Barbara Harbach’s One of Ours – A Cather Symphony for Wind Ensemble on October 10 at Touhill Performing Arts Center of University of Missouri – St. LouisPosted by s21concerts in Concert Announcement
Barbara Harbach’s One of Ours – A Cather Symphony for Wind Ensemble will be performed by the University of Missouri – St. Louis Wind Ensemble under the direction of Gary Brandes on Wednesday, October 10 – 7:30 PM in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall of the Touhill Performing Arts Center, 1 University Boulevard on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Presented by the UMSL Department of Music, this will be the Wind Ensemble’s first performance of the season.
The composer writes about this piece, “I did not so much choose to write One of Ours so much as Willa Cather’s compelling novel chose me. I was fully prepared to write a symphony based on the American classics O Pioneers! and My Ántonia. I have for years been drawn to the evocative beauty of these works and to the strength of the heroines Alexandra Bergson and Ántonia Shimerda. Much to my surprise, as I began to write, it was Cather’s 1922 Pulitzer Prizewinner about a World War I American War hero that kindled my imagination.”
One of Ours – A Cather Symphony has been recorded by Maestro Kirk Trevor and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra for MSR Classics (http://www.msrcd.com/catalog/cd/MS1252).
Notes about the movements are: “On Lovely Creek” is an American pastorale, evoking Claude’s (hero Claude Wheeler’s) youth on the Great Nebraska Prairie and the innocence of a youngish America just beginning to face the tragedies of the twentieth century. “Autumn in Beaufort” is a charming interlude in the War, the celebration of a town newly liberated from the Germans. The dead have been buried and honored, and those who remain savor the small joys of life. “Honor at Boar’s Head” is a remembering of the life and service of the many thousands of war dead whose bravery and self-sacrifice ensures the many freedoms we enjoy.
The October 10 program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 314-516-4949 or visit http://www.touhill.org/.
