Zodiac Trio premieres Richard Danielpour’s “Lamentation” at Le Poisson Rouge (NYC) – Jan 17th @ 7:30PMPosted by s21concerts in Concert Announcement
On Friday, January 17 at 7:30 PM, the acclaimed, award-winning pioneer of the clarinet-violin-piano instrumentation – Zodiac Trio – will present an eclectic program at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge.
The Zodiac Trio will be joined by guest artist Wolfram Koessel, cellist of the American String Quartet, as they give the U.S. premiere of a work written for the ensemble by Richard Danielpour. Titled “Lamentation,” the piece received its world premiere in Paris, France, in June of 2013 as part of a special Franco-American contemporary music concert featuring Danielpour, Zodiac Trio and French composers Nicolas Bacri.
The extended instrumentation with Koessel will also present John Mackey’s “Breakdown Tango” – a critically acclaimed, tour de force of a chamber music piece, that is both highly virtuosic and dramatically dark.
Also on offer for the evening is another work written for the ensemble – composer Andrew List’s “Klezmer Fantazye,” which borrows from the Klezmer tradition, yet is presented with List’s own unique contemporary language.
Lastly, the concert will feature a pillar of the clarinet-violin-piano instrumentation that has become a calling card for the Zodiac Trio – Igor Stravinsky’s legendary “L’Histoire du Soldat,” to be performed with a specially tailored narration by Bill Krakauer.
Guided by a passion to bring the clarinet-violin-piano trio into the ranks of the more traditional ensembles, the Zodiac Trio is recognized by many as the new leader of this instrumentation, with an international concert schedule that comprises many top-tier venues such as Beijing Performing Arts Center, Ottawa Chamberfest, Internatinal Colmar Festival, Schneider Concert Series and Festival Radio Frand Montpelier. In its relatively short history – the ensemble formed in 2006 at Manhattan School of Music before becoming the first American group and the only ensemble with a wind instrument to enter the esteemed Ysaye Quartet Chamber Music program at the Paris Superior Conservatory – the Zodiac Trio has achieved a level of recognition on the international chamber music stage, rarely bestowed upon an ensemble of such untraditional instrumentation.
The Zodiac Trio members are: Kliment Krylovskiy, clarinet; Vanessa Mollard, violin and Riko Higuma, piano.
The complete program is as follows:
Andrew List – “Klezmer Fantazye” (written for the Zodiac Trio)
