Palisades Virtuosi Presents Musical Tales Concert on March 1 at Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, New JerseyPosted by s21concerts in Concert Announcement
The Palisades Virtuosi flute, clarinet and piano trio presents Musical Tales – the second subscription concert of their 2013-2014 season on Saturday, March 1 – 8:00 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The evening will also include a pre-concert composer and performer talk at 7:15.
The March 1 concert repertoire includes the World Premiere of a newly commissioned work by composer Kerry Turner, based on Vathek, an early gothic novel. This Arabian tale was written by William Beckford in 1782, during a time when European culture was influenced by Orientalism, as well as great interest in the supernatural.
Other works on the program are The Ugly Duckling set to Saint-Saens Caprice, for trio and narrator, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, a PV arrangement of Bizet’s Carmen Rhapsody and a new short story written by a student writing contest winner, inspired by one of PV’s commissioned works.
Special guest narrator will be Tony Award nominee Rob McClure (seen at right). He received the nomination in 2012 for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, for his first starring role on Broadway in the musical Chaplin, as Charlie Chaplin.
Kerry Turner, a native of San Antonio, Texas, has been writing music since he was ten years old. At the age of 11, he won the San Antonio Music Society Composition Competition and six years later was awarded Baylor University’s first prize at its composition contest. He has been commissioned by, among others, the U.S. Air Force “Heritage of America” band, the Alexander Horn Ensemble Japan, the Brass Ensemble of the Symphony Orchestra of Lyon and the Freden International Music Festival in Germany. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 seniors and students and $10 for children under 12. For tickets, please call 201-488-1149 or visit http://m.bpt.me/event/520616. A reception with artists and composers will follow the concert.
