Joel Feigin’s Variations on Empty Space (2008) will be performed by pianist Margaret Mills on Saturday, March 1 at 8:00 PM in Karl Geiringer Hall on the campus of University of California, Santa Barbara, 552 University Road in Santa Barbara, CA.

Margaret Mills had commissioned and premiered Variations on Empty Space, which is included on her Cambria Master Recordings CD, Meditations and Overtones, along with Feigin’s Four Meditations from Dogen.

The From East to West: 20th and 21st Century American Piano Music concert will also include music by Beach, Coates, Schober and Schonthal.

Margaret Mills enjoys an international reputation, having performed throughout the United States, Europe and China. She has long been associated with the music of Joel Feigin, as well as many other contemporary composers. Ms. Mills has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops, Fort Myers Symphony, Schenectady (NY) Symphony and the Fairfield Orchestra. Visit her at http://www.margaretmills.com/.

Joel Feigin’s  commissions include a Fromm Commission for Aviv: Concerto for Piano and Chamber Orchestra, written for Yael Weiss, as well as piano works for Margaret Mills and Leonard Stein, two orchestral works for the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, and many chamber works. His CDs include the North/South Recordings 2-CD set, Transience, as well as two major piano works performed by Margaret Mills in Meditations and Overtones on Cambria Master Recordings. Feigin’s Lament Amid Silence CD is on the MSR label (MS1413), and features violist Helen Callus. A Professor of composition at the University of California Santa Barbara, Dr. Feigin studied with Nadia Boulanger at Fontainebleau and with Roger Sessions at The Juilliard School.
