Symphony Number One: Façade

BALTIMORE, MD  —  Symphony Number One will make their concert debut at Carriage House Baltimore on March 7 & 8, 2015 with the world premiere of Trope by James Chu. Led by conductor Jordan Randall Smith, the program will also feature William Walton’s Façade for chamber orchestra and reciter. Symphony Number One is a unique addition to Baltimore’s contemporary music scene. The group will oversee the commission, performance, and promotion of substantial works by emerging composers and program them alongside carefully selected works of the classical canon.


Façade is a set of “Entertainments” or short musical numbers written between 1926 and 1938 by English composer Sir William Walton (1902-1983). Walton sets nonsense poetry by Dame Edith Sitwell (1887-1964). Soprano Laura Whittenberger, will recite Edith Sitwell’s whimsical verses and Catarina Farreira will perform Walton’s dauntingly virtuosic solo cello part. Façade is scored for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, percussion, cello, and reciter.

In the program’s featured World Premiere, tentatively titled Trope, James Chu augments the Walton chamber ensemble with a violin to round out the instrumental/vocal octet. This new work is Chu’s artistic response to Façade and builds on his previous theatrical work at Princeton University and at the Peabody Conservatory. This marks the second collaboration between Chu and Whittenberger; Smith previously conducted Whittenberger in the Peabody Opera Theater‘s 2013 production of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites.

Program note for piece by Christian Carey:

I enjoy working with unconventional combinations. I’ve composed a number of pieces in recent years for solo voice and solo string player. The W.B. Yeats poem “He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven” was one of the readings that my wife and I selected for our wedding ceremony. For our first anniversary, I created this setting for vocalist and string instrument. The inscription on the score’s title page reads:

To my wife Kay Mitchell on the occasion of our first Wedding Anniversary (They say the appropriate gift is paper; I took the liberty of adding notes.)

Baltimore, MD – On April 1 and 2 at the University of Baltimore’s Performing Arts Theater, The Figaro Project will present its “Contemporary Opera Trio,” three world-premiere one-act operas written by Baltimore-based composers. The production will be performed free to the public.

Operas include Paul Mathews’ crime drama “Piecing it Apart,” Douglas Buchanan’s creation myth “Lux et Tenebrae,” and Joshua Bornfield’s political comedy “Strong like Bull.” Featuring thirteen local performers and accompanied by piano trio, the operas will be fully-staged and sung in English. Jim Stopher will conduct.

After The Figaro Project’s inaugural season, founder Caitlin Vincent pursued an ambitious program of contemporary opera for the troupe’s second season. She formed a collaborative partnership with three Peabody composers, including Peabody Dean of Academic Affairs, Paul Mathews, with the goal of exposing the Baltimore region to new opera in an accessible way.

Mathews notes, “The Figaro Project has prepared these operas for their first hearings as if they were staples of the repertoire. Singers may dream of Italian arias, but real artists engage the problems of our world with the language and idioms of our time. ”

“All opera was once new,” says Vincent, “and this is an opportunity to experience three new operas that were conceived and created right in the heart of Baltimore.”
