wild Up | Ornithology

The Music of: Messiaen, Haydn, Charlie Parker, Brian Ferneyhough and Andrew Bird.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, the L.A.-based classical wunderkinds wild Up take over the intimate Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena with a one-of-a-kind show about birds and flight.

“We want to know how flight works and what it sounds like,” said the group’s artist director and conductor Christopher Rountree. “We want to figure out how to take off.” The audience need not prepare for a lecture about Newton’s laws and lift; the program gets off the ground with composer/ornithologist Olivier Messiaen’s magnum opus “Oiseaux Exotiques.” From there, the group takes on pieces by Brian Ferneyhough, Charlie Parker, Joseph Haydn, Chris Kallmyer and Andrew Bird.
