Iktus Percussion joins Loadbang for a remarkable all-Xenakis concert this Friday, April 27th, 8pm at the AC Institute in Chelsea. The concert will feature an incredible lineup including Ensemble Loadbang (Jeffrey Gavett, Alejandro Acierto, Will Lang and Andy Kozar), Mariel Roberts, conductor Yoshi Onishi, and a venerable cast of up-and-coming new music performers in New York tackling exciting and challenging selections of Iannis Xenakis’ solo and chamber music.

Based in New York City, Iktus Percussion is an ambitious, dynamic young ensemble committed to expanding the boundaries of the percussion genre. Iktus is a collective-based operation, featuring an array of industrious and multi-talented percussionists with Chris Graham, Justin Wolf, Steve Sehman, Nick Woodbury, and Cory Bracken at the core. As a group with strong ties to the local artistic community, Iktus is dedicated to collaboration with emerging artists, having commissioned over fifty new works for percussion from such composers asAngélica Negrón, Aaron Siegel, Lisa R. Coons, Jenny Olivia Johnson, Stefan Weisman, and Billy Martin (ofMedeski, Martin and Wood), among others.

With an exciting and diverse range of repertoire, Iktus has performed at such venues and festivals as the Bang on A Can Marathon, Galapagos Arts Space, Le Poisson Rouge, Issue Project Room, Symphony Space, and Trinity Church. Iktus has been appointed to several residencies including SUNY Purchase College (where they performed Laura Kaminsky’s Terra Terribilis, a concerto for percussion quartet and orchestra), CUNY Brooklyn College, and the Pre-College music program at Stony Brook University. As performer-educators, Iktus has also hosted master classes to various enthusiastic elementary school audiences. Community outreach and public performance is an essential aspect of Iktus’ mission: in September of 2011, Iktus performed an exciting all-percussion outdoor concert in Fort Greene Park, including works by Steve Reich, Julia Wolfe, and IannisXenakis.

In the Spring of 2010, Iktus was selected as a Time Out New York Critic’s Pick: Top Ten Concert of the Year, and received critical acclaim from the New York Times for their performance with the St. Petersburg Chamber Symphony in Symphony Space’s “Wall to Wall” series: Music of the Soviet ERA, and sold out the final evening of the Gaudeamus Muziekweek with critical acclaim at Issue Project Room in January of 2012.

New music chamber group loadbang, hailed as “inventive” by the New York Times, is building a new kind of music for mixed ensemble. Their unique lung-powered instrumentation (bass clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone voice) has provoked diverse responses from composers, resulting in a broad stylistic palette ranging from wordless microtonal meditations to broad political satire. In the past three years, they have premiered more than 40 works, including several written by members of the band, and a new arrangement by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. They also perform works for indeterminate ensemble, including such New York School classics as Brown’s December 1952 and Cage’s Four6 and Song Books.

Not content to dwell solely in the realm of notated music, loadbang is known for its searing and unpredictable improvisations, exploring the edges of instrumental and vocal timbre and technique, and blurring the line between composed and extemporaneous music. To this end, they have embarked on a project to record improvisations and works written by members of the band, designing fabricating and releasing hand-made copies in a limited edition. Recent performances include appearances at the Roger Smith Hotel on Talea Ensemble’s iNSIDE Out series, a program of all premieres at Issue Project Room, and a performance of Cage’s Song Books on the Avant Media Festival. The members of loadbang met as part of the first class of Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance program.
