Incredibly versatile and delightfully surprising oboe super trio Threeds celebrates the release of its Kickstarter-funded debut album, Unraveled, at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 2 on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 8pm. Unraveled highlights the diversity of influences that run deep with startlingly refreshing covers of Bjork, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, Charles Mingus, Michael Jackson, The Doors and more alongside beautiful, original works.
Lauded for their “technical virtuosity” and “willingness to take risks producing engaging, contemporary classical music,” Threeds has expanded oboe repertoire in remarkably innovative ways delivering “effortless dexterity” and a “tightly woven genre-smashing journey of an album.” Threeds Oboe Trio is comprised of Kathy Halvorson and Mark Snyder, oboe and Katie Scheele, English horn. All three will be on hand to sign copies and greet audience members after the performance.

THREEDS is a New York City based oboe trio that includes oboists Kathy Halvorson, Katie Scheele and Mark Snyder. Formed in 2008, the trio enjoys creating new paths for the oboe and English horn, playing their own arrangements of pop, rock, jazz, folk and world music while using improvisational techniques. The members of Threeds have also arranged music to accompany several local singer-songwriters, including Paul Brill, Amber Rubarth, Andrew Vladeck, Jamie Leonhart and Adam Levy. Threeds have recorded music at the legendary Avatar Studios in New York City and Daptone Records in Brooklyn, NY.
The trio aims to make the oboe an instrument that is more accessible to all, bringing their music “out of the concert hall” to bars, rock venues, galleries and public places. Having played over 40 shows in the past two years, the trio has earned a respectful following in the NYC area and often plays at venues including Joe’s Pub, the Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall, Caffe Vivaldi, the Cathedral at St. John the Divine, Trinity Church Wall Street and public outdoor spaces as part of Make Music NY. This summer, the trio was invited (by audition) to participate in the MTA’s Music Under New York program and will be making their “underground” debut this fall.
Over the past year, Threeds has also performed in Los Angeles (Wood & Vine), Providence (First Baptist Church of America), Philadelphia (Summer Solstice Celebration at the Kimmel Center), Hobe Sound, FL (private event), Cape May (Chalfonte Hotel Concerts by Candelight), the New York Summer Music Festival in Oneoneta, NY and at the 2011 International Double Reed Society conference in Tempe, Arizona.
Threeds is excited to be share their first full-length CD, Unraveled, which just came out this June and is available on CD Baby, iTunes and through their website www.threedsoboetrio.com. The album was recorded at Avatar Studios by engineer Robert L. Smith (U2, Lady Gaga, Glee) and produced by Scott Anderson (John Gold, Zach Brock) at O Lab studio in Brooklyn.
Individually, each of the oboists in THREEDS are accomplished freelance musicians and have played in many prestigious orchestras including the Binghamton Philharmonic, the American Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Richmond Symphony, Cork Opera, the Key West Symphony, the Albany Symphony, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the Reading (PA) Symphony, the Westchester Philharmonic, the Long Island Philharmonic and the Trillium E Orchestra with Anthony Braxton. The members of Threeds have also performed on Broadway shows, played on several popular music albums and on Emmy-nominated independent film soundtracks. They are music educators at several local schools and colleges including Western Connecticut State University, C.W. Post, the Rudolph Steiner School, the Brearley School, the Bloomingdale School of Music and the New York Summer Music Festival.
