Ayano Kataoka and Conor Nelson

Flute/percussionist duo Conor Nelson and Ayano Kataoka will close the inaugural season of Music at First on May 28, 2010, at 7:30 pm. This special concert is held in celebration of the release of the Duo’s CD “Breaking Training” (New Focus Recordings). Music at First is a new music series held at First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn through May 2010. This series, curated by Wil Smith (composer and organist at First Presbyterian), occurs monthly, featuring one performer or ensemble per evening. Smith describes Music at First as “a diverse mix of New York City’s best new music ensembles and performers, accessible to a wide audience of both community members and seasoned new music listeners.” Earlier performers in the series included Threefifty Duo, a “critic’s choice” (Time Out NY) performance by pianist Kathleen Supové, and cellist/vocalist/composer Jody Redhage and her band Fire in July.

Percussionist and marimbist Ayano Kataoka is known for her brilliant and dynamic technique, as well as the unique elegance and artistry she brings to her performances. A versatile performer, she regularly presents music of diverse genres and mediums. Last season, together with cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the American Museum of Natural History, Ms. Kataoka gave a world premiere of Bruce Adolphe’s Self Comes to Mind for cello and two percussionists, based on a text by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, and featuring interactive video images of brain scans triggered by the live music performance. She also performed Leon Kirchner’s Flutings for Paula with Paula Robison in honor of Mr. Kirchner’s 90th birthday concert at New York’s Miller Theater and at the Gardner Museum in Boston. Kataoka was the first percussionist to be chosen for The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two, a three-season residency program for emerging artists offering high-profile performance opportunities.

Praised for his “long-breathed phrases and luscious tone” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Canadian flutist Conor Nelson is established as a leading flutist of his generation. Since his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, he has appeared frequently as soloist and recitalist throughout the United States and abroad. Recent performances include engagements with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Philharmonia of Yale, the Manhattan School of Music Philharmona, the Stony Brook Symphony, the Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra, the Brevard Repertory Orchestra, the Festival Wind Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra and at the Banff Centre. The only wind player to win the Grand Prize at the WAMSO Young Artist Competition, he recently won first prize at the William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition. In addition, he has received top prizes at the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition and the Haynes International Flute Competition.

Involved in several exciting commissioning projects for their genre, the Conor and Ayano Duo has performed in Merkin Concert Hall, CAMI Hall, The Tokyo Opera City Hall, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Izumi Hall, and as guest artists for the Ottawa Flute Association in Canada. Their new CD, “Breaking Training”, features works by Dennis DeSantis, Roshanne Etezady, Gareth Farr, Naoko Hishinuma, Chan Ka Nin, and Teruyuki Noda.

Existential Pilot New Music Collective is presenting two concerts of contemporary chamber music by composers William Zuckerman, Ezra Donner, and Jonathan Lubin on March 2-3 in New York City and Philadelphia. The concert will feature the performing talents of clarinetist Mark Dover, soprano Claire DiVizio, and violinist Zoë Aqua, as well as the featured composers.

The program represents an eclectic range of stylistic and literary influences, from traditional Jewish and American vernacular music, to avant-garde electronic music, to works inspired by the popular South Park television series.

Existential Pilot is a new music collective started by students and alumni of the University of Michigan, dedicated to the performance of dynamic and relevant contemporary music. The group is particularly committed to showcasing the talents of young and emerging composers and performers.

On November 21^st, 2009, Avant Media will present the world premiere of Doleo Æternus, an evening-length concert, rooted in the history and tradition of North Indian rāga performance, by minimal composer and Avant Media founding director, Randy Gibson with video sculpture by Oscar Henriquez. The performance will take place at The Wild Project at 195 East 3^rd Street in New York City at 8PM. Doleo Æternus is performed live by Matt Beckemeyer, Drew Blumberg, Randy Gibson, Annie Lyle, Laine Rettmer, Megan Schubert, Cleek Schrey, and Kobe Van Cauwenberghe. Unfolding slowly over time and making use of ritual, visuals, and scent, Doleo Æternus is an all-encompassing musical experience that is unabashedly modern yet deeply rooted in tradition. Scored for voices, instruments, just intonation toy organs, and computer, Doleo Æternus focuses on intensely defined improvisations over a melodic cycle and drones. The computer restructures the live sound into looped and scaled snippets obscuring pulse, and blending textures and registers. Oscar Henriquez’s video sculpture, based on elements of Tibetan calligraphy, provides a visual focus for the listener and serves to elucidate the structure of the piece as it progresses through the sections.

On the process and history of Doleo Æternus, Gibson says “When I had my first voice lesson with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela in early 2005 I never thought that it would have such a profound and permanent influence on my work. What began as a simple chord progression has evolved into an incredible wealth of material and a whole new way of thinking about music. The ensemble performing with me is truly amazing, and represents a rich cross-section of performance traditions. Everyone brings their own unique voice to this piece, and it’s an absolute pleasure to play.”

The world premiere of Doleo Æternus presents a singular vision of new classical music where the full experience of the audience is taken into account and a piece grows and evolves with each new performance. Every performance of Doleo Æternus is different and completely new, from the chance operations of the computer, to the choices of each individual performer, a performance can never be repeated.

There is no entry fee.

Submission criteria:

Original composition for a cappella, 4-6 part mixed choir, occasional divisi is acceptable;
Three to six minutes long;
Not previously performed in Massachusetts;
Anonymous submission:
Remove all names and identifying marks;
Provide a sealed envelope containing your name, address, email and phone number;
Submit a legible score. In addition, recordings will be accepted but are not required.
If the text is not public domain, include written permission to use it.
You may submit electronically, to the e-mail below, with a pdf attachment. Sibelius, Finale and other formats will not be accepted.
The winning composition is to be performed in May of 2010 at the Cambridge Chamber Singers concerts in the Boston area. CCS encourages the composer’s attendance.

The Cambridge Chamber Singers reserves the right to not award a prize.

The winning composer must provide a final performance score by January 10, 2010. CMS will make 40 copies for the chorus.

There are no restrictions according to race, sex, age or residency. The text may be in any language. A composer may submit more than one piece.

New York, NY, Contemporary music ensemble Red Light New Music opens its fifth season with new chamber works at the Stone. The Red Light Ensemble will perform the virtuosic and mercurial Inguz (Fertility) by the Australian composer Liza Lim and a new work for cello and piano by the German-American composer Reiko Füting. The ensemble will also perform new acoustic and electro-acoustic works by Red Light composers Christopher Cerrone, Kyle Hillbrand, Vincent Raikhel, and Scott Wollschleger.

Red Light New Music is a non-profit, New York-based contemporary music series and ensemble dedicated to the presentation of new classical music.
