The Metropolitan Museum of Art
ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, has the honor of performing Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with one of the great interpreters of the work, acclaimed German actress Barbara Sukowa, presented by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium (1000 Fifth Avenue). The concert is part of the Met Museum Presents series 1913: The World Implodes, which seeks to put that striking year into historical context while finding parallels with the present day.
Sukowa has received numerous awards for her film and stage work. Her latest critically acclaimed film, Hannah Arendt, was released earlier this year. She was awarded Germany’s “Best Actress” Award for the work. Sukowa is also renowned as a concert artist, and has worked with major orchestras around the world including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in many of the world’s great concert halls. A DVD recording of her latest performance of Pierrot Lunaire with Mitsuko Uchida during the Salzburg Festival was recently released by Film+co (Schoenberg Center). ACME’s performance will also feature selections from Caroline Shaw’s Ritornello, written in 2013, the world premiere of which was given by the ensemble as part of a concert of Shaw’s music on October 16 at Brookfield Place Winter Garden in New York, presented by Arts Brookfield and WNYC’s New Sounds Live. Shaw’s Ritornello includes elements of American hymnody, Baroque music, and her own contemporary sonic sensibility.
ACME players for November 2 are Laura Lutzke, violin; Ben Russell, violin; Caleb Burhans, viola; Clarice Jensen, cello; Andrew Rehrig, flute; Hideaki Aomori, clarinet; and Timo Andres, piano.
