Earlier this year, John King released his second CD, “10 Mysteries” on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. King has 2 previous CD releases of music for string quartet; AllSteel (Tzadik) and Ethel (Cantaloupe). Featuring passionate and inspiring performances by the remarkable quartet Crucible with King himself on viola, the music on 10 Mysteries jumps from moment to moment with lightening speed and an organic sense of form. In his second CD on Tzadik he again embraces rock, jazz, blues and other popular styles in an energetic and colorful program for string quartet.

Crucible will also be joined by the TILT Brass project’s quartet (Rachel Drehmann, horn; Joe Exley, tuba; Russ Johnson, trumpet; Chris McIntyre, trombone) and Charlotte Dobbs, soprano, for the world premiere of SAPPHO presto chango. These 12 short arias are based on the poem fragments of Sappho which are to be performed as an independent layer to the instrumental ensemble. To end the evening, pianist Jenny Lin will perform King’s petite ouverture en forme de mErCE CunninGHAm, a piece written for Merce in honor of his 90th birthday.

Crucible features New York string luminaries Cornelius Dufallo, Chris Otto and Alex Waterman, who perform with such groups as Ethel, the JACK Quartet and the Either/Or Ensemble.

Led by trombonist and composer Chris McIntyre, Brooklyn-based TILT Brass is a versatile collective of brass and percussion artists that present works ranging from the historical avant garde to commissioned works by composers such as James Tenney, Anthony Coleman, and Lois V. Vierk.

Soprano Charlotte Dobbs maintains an active opera performance and concert career. In 2008, she appeared in recital with Mitsuko Uchida at the Marlboro Music Festival, performing Schoenberg’s Book of the Hanging Gardens. Miss Dobbs made her Kimmel Center and Carnegie Hall debuts in Nielsen’s Third Symphony with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Alan Gilbert in 2008.

Jenny Lin is one of the most respected young pianists today, admired for her adventurous programming and charismatic stage presence. Her ability to combine classical and contemporary literature has brought her to the attention of international critics and audiences alike.

Composer, guitarist and violist John King (www.JohnKingMusic.com) has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet, Red {an orchestra}, Ethel, the Albany Symphony, Bang On A Can All-Stars, Mannheim Ballet, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, the Ballets de Monte Carlo and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, with whom he worked closely for more than 20 years. He has written three operas (his most recent opera Dice Thrown was recently performed at CalArts in Los Angeles) and has composed for orchestra, chamber ensembles, rock bands, dance, film and theater. He was Music Curator at The Kitchen from 1999-2003. King won the Alpert Award in the Arts for Music in 2009. This award, initiated and funded by the Herb Alpert Foundation, provides unrestricted, annual prizes of $75,000 to five artists.

The 21st season of Interpretations continues into 2010, presenting two of the downtown scene’s most distinct horn players, both presenting imaginative ensemble configurations that produce vivid imagery. Trumpeter and composer Roy Campbell’s Akhenaten performs music from their recent Aum Fidelity release, Live at the Vision Festival 12. Saxophonist and composer Matana Roberts presents her compositional configuration Illumination, based on ongoing research related to the questions, history, and conundrums of the universal creative act of dreaming.

The 21st Season of Thomas Buckner’s innovative series of new music continues on Decermber 10, 2009, featuring two guitarist/composers premiering new music for two very different string quartets. Pioneering new-music group, FLUX Quartet, premieres Elegies For The Afterland, a new work by eclectic composer and punk-era innovator David First, commissioned through the Meet The Composer Commissioning Music/USA program.

David First’s Elegies for the Afterland is an evening length work composed for string quartet and electronics. Drones moving through shifting extended chords tuned to just-intonation ratios provide a field inside which the quartet executes languorous unison melodies, hallucinogenic pitch-bends and deep polyrhythmic rocking. Influenced by numerous world events and circumstances, the title refers to Mr. First’s concern over the planet we are leaving to future generations.

Dom Minasi’s unique string ensemble functions both like contemporary chamber music group and a jazz band, due largely to Minasi’s innovative compositions and the distinct characteristics of the improvising musicians in the ensemble. Minasi’s classical guitar sometimes substitutes for viola, second violin, or cello, diversifying and enhancing richness of the textural palette. With the addition of contrabass and the inter-mingling of parts, this quartet has its own unique sound.

The 21^st Season of Thomas Buckner’s innovative series of new music continues on November 12, 2009, featuring work by two American masters of integrating composition, electronics, and live performance: Earl Howard and Edmund Campion.

Saxophonist, composer and electronic sound constructionist Earl Howard’s work seamlessly integrates meticulously sculpted electroacoustic textures with the visceral immediacy of  live improvisation. Howard presents Strasser 60 for synthesizer solo, 2455 for saxophone solo, and Crupper, an electroacoustic duet w/ Koto player Miya Masaoka.

The 21^st Season of Thomas Buckner’s innovative series of new music continues on October 15, 2009, with dynamic Belgian pianist Daan Vandewalle performing selections from his recent recording of piano works by pioneering composer Gordon Mumma dating from 1960-2001. Also featured are works by American Composer Alvin Curran, and a handful of contemporary works by Belgian composers, including leading postwar Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts (1923-1993), emerging Flemish composer Thomas Smetryns, the extremely prolific and unusual composer Boudewijn Buckinx.

Daan Vandewalle enjoys an international reputation as new music specialist,with a strong focus on 20th and 21th century american piano music. He studied at the Conservatory of Ghent, Belgium, with Claude Coppens, and at Mills College, California, with Alvin Curran. His programs are often highly unusual both on a technical or intellectual level, often combining the classical repertoire such as Mussorgski and Chopin with premieres of new works written especially for him by composers including Fred Frith, Alvin Curran, and Fredrick Rzewski.

The 21st Season of Thomas Buckner’s innovative series of new music begins on September 17, 2009, with a presentation of the longstanding collaboration between saxophonist/composer Yusef Lateef and percussionist/composer Adam Rudolph. The collaborative duo of Yusef Lateef & Adam Rudolph began working together in 1988, and over the last 20 years, they have shared their work with enthusiastic audiences in Europe and the USA. Presented a few short weeks prior to Lateef’s 89th birthday, this evening’s program features three newly commissioned works and readings of original poetry by Yusef Lateef, with musical accompaniment.

At nearly 89 years of age, DR. YUSEF LATEEF has been a major force on the international musical scene for more than six decades. He has been named an American Jazz Master for the year 2010 by the National Endowment for the Arts, in recognition of his many contributions to the world of music. His explorations into sound have led him from study of Eastern music since the 1950’s to a recent four year Senior Research Fellowship at Ahmadu Bello University, in Zaria, Nigeria. He contributed to the legendary groups of Dizzy Gillespe, Charles Mingus and Cannonball Adderly and led his own ensembles in tours worldwide. He has composed for and performed with the Detroit, New World, and Augusta Symphony Orchestras. His recent work The African American Epic Suite was recorded and performed by the Cologne Radio Orchestra and featured himself and Adam Rudolph as soloists. Dr. Lateef also has many publications to his credit in both music and literature. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Music at the University of Massachusetts. www.yuseflateef.com

Composer and hand percussionist ADAM RUDOLPH has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by the New York Times and “a master percussionist” by Musician magazine. He has recorded extensively and performed at festivals and concerts throughout the North & South America, Europe and Japan, with Don Cherry, Shankar, Foday Musa Suso, Kevin Eubanks, Pharoah Sanders, and Hassan Hakmoun. Rudolph has been on the faculty of Esalen Institute, California Institute of the Arts and the Danish Jazz Federation Summer Institute. He has received grants from the Cary Trust & NEA and has released several recordings and toured internationally his own ensemble, Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures. His first opera, The Dreamer, recently premiered to coincide with its CD release. Rudolph’s rhythm repository and methodology book, Pure Rhythm was published in 2006 by Advance Music, Germany. Rudolph has received grants and compositional commissions from the Rockefeller Foundation, Chamber Music America, Meet the Composer, Mary Flagler Cary Trust, the NEA, Arts International, Durfee Foundation and American Composers Forum. We proudly announce the Fall 2009 events for the 21st season of Interpretations, a New York-based concert series focusing on the relationship between contemporary composers and their interpreters. Featuring exciting premieres of new musical works from composers young and old, and new presentations collaborative endeavors between seasoned veterans of the avant-garde, Interpretations presents four Thursday evening events, once per month. September 17 – Adam Rudolph / Yusef Lateef: 3 World Premieres
A presentation of the longstanding collaboration between percussionist Adam Rudolph and saxophonist/composer Yusef Lateef (presented a few short days prior to Lateef’s 89th birthday). Mixing formal composition, improvisation and interactive instrument design, Edmund Campion’s music focuses on real-time interactive computer/instrument environments. Invited guests include saxophonist Susan Fancher.

December 10 – FLUX Quartet performs David First / Dom Minasi String Quartet
Eclectic composer and punk-era innovator David First premieres new music for the FLUX Quartet, and guitarist/composer Dom Minasi presents works from his recent CD Dissonance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder, featuring Dom Minasi on nylon string guitar, with Jason Hwang, Tomas Ulrich, and Ken Filiano.
