I’ll be doing a bit of cheering for the home team here. Tonight, I was pleased to see both faculty colleagues and students from every department on campus show up at the senior recital of Michael Fili, one of our undergraduate composition majors. Mike’s a talented young composer who’s got a beautiful harmonic language and a real gift for choral writing.

While I was impressed with the maturity of Mike’s music, I was equally taken with the group of performers he’d put together for the show. Dozens of students volunteered their time and talents, learning a great deal of often-challenging music and pulling it off with both poise and enthusiasm.

It’s heartening to see students who root for each other to succeed, and then lend their support to make it happen. The spirit of collaboration and cooperation that pervades music-making here is something very special.

It’s easy to lose sight of that in the midst of a busy semester, and I’m grateful to Mike and his volunteer choir for the reminder.
