Streetcar Journey review; “Sometimes There’s God So Quickly” (Video)

Streetcar Journey
Chie Sato Roden and Fire in July
Married Fox Records

Pianist Chie Sato Roden and the chamber ensemble Fire in July join forces on the new recording Streetcar Journey (Married Fox). The album features arrangements of selections from Alex North’s score to the 1951 film “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Alongside these are original compositions by Fire in July members Jody Redhage and Alan Ferber.

The resulting work is both an homage to North and a creative fantasy that uses his music as a point of departure. Ferber and Redhage have deftly modulated their own contemporary jazz and indie classical styles to relate them to the classic Hollywood stylings of North’s score. Sato Roden is a deft proponent for these works as well, spinning elegant lines and sensitively voicing smoky harmonies.

You can get a taste of Streetcar Journey alongside stills from the film at the album’s New York release party on February 5 (details below).
