It’s the tenth anniversary of Bang on a Can’s summer festival at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. Nicknamed “Banglewood,” due to its proximity to another music festival down the road in Lenox, BoaC’s residency this month has seen a number of programs featuring emerging talents. Next weekend, on 7/30, they are doing one of the All-Stars’ signatures, a new music marathon.
But, instead of focusing on the younger generation, today’s events are devoted to one of contemporary classical’s most prominent figures: John Coolidge Adams. BoaC founding member David Lang will lead a talk entitled, “John Adams: Music & Mastery” at 2:30 PM. At 4:30, there will be a recital of chamber works in the museum gallery.
Although he now resides in California, Adams was born in Massachusetts (Worcester, to be precise). Many cultural touchstones of New England have informed his work. Thus, it’s fitting that the final event of the day – a concert at 8 PM – will feature Adams’ Shaker Loops and American Standard. Other pieces on the program include Gnarly Buttons and Scratchband.
