There are many reasons that I wish I could attend this week’s SXSW festival (administering midterm exams gets in the way of a good time). But one set stands out for me as a worthy invasion of indie environs by contemporary jazz/classical artists. Zurich based pianist Nik Bartsch and bass clarinettist Sha (who regularly play today in Bartsch’s “Zen funk” quintet Ronin), are appearing tonight at SXSW (details below). It is a terrific opportunity for ECM Records to be represented by some of its most inventive and genre-defying artists (which, given the catholicity in taste displayed by label producer Manfred Eicher, is really saying something!).
