A Few Memories of Writing for StN:
Interviewing Elliott Carter and Milton Babbitt, two of the most influential composers in postwar America, in their nineties when the respective articles were written. Both recently passed away and I’m very grateful I got a chance to speak with them about their music for Signal to Noise. Thankful too for completely different adventures: talking about Radiohead and Elliott Smith with Christopher O’Riley, modernism and jazz pianism with Craig Taborn, the ins and outs of writing free jazz charts with Tim Berne, and everything from John Cage to baroque performance practice to film scoring with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Not a remunerative gig, but certainly a fun one!
