MATA Call for Scores

We don’t generally post calls for scores with age limits, as suggesting that composers stop emerging or requiring organizational support at an arbitrary age is, in our view, discriminatory and foolish. But since one of the MATA organization’s principal mandates is to help young composers, we’ll make an exception. Guidelines for their “Under 40″ call listed below.

Music at the Anthology (MATA)

Application Deadline: January 15, 2013

MATA seeks submissions from composers under age 40 for our 2014 festival and commissioning program. We accept all music: sound art, video, electronic, found instruments, toys, installations, fully notated, improvised, and everything in between. A panel of distinguished composers, performers, and conductors will select approximately 20 participants for our four-day festival in New York City. Selected composers will either receive a performance of their pre-existing work or a commission to write a new piece. Performers come from a constantly rotating roster of ensembles that in years past has included full orchestra, chorus, piano soloists, chamber groups ranging from 2-18 musicians, and much more.

Please submit links to scores and recordings of your two best works; a current CV; list of compositions; and contact information through our website http://www.matafestival.org. We will only accept digital submissions. There is no entrance fee.

Audio: we accept either links to a personal website or through SoundCloud. In both cases, links must be streaming, not downloads.

Scores: we accept links to PDF documents either through your personal website or Issuu, a free publishing platform that allows you to upload PDF’s and provides a link for anyone to view the PDF online.

PLEASE BE SURE that your links remain in operation indefinitely, as the review process will not take place until the spring of 2013. Do not provide links that will expire after any period of time.

Thursday: Pictures 2012 Concert at Montclair Art Museum

New Jersey Arts Collective is presenting their annual Pictures concert at the Montclair Art Museum on Thursday, May 24 (pre-concert talk at 6:45; show starts at 7:30). In response to a competition held earlier this Spring, high school and college age students submitted compositions for solo piano somehow inspired by the Philip Guston painting Untitled 142 (1979), which is part of MAM’s collection. The winning entries, as well as several “micro-commissions” of short works from area composers, will be performed on the concert by pianist Carl Patrick Bolleia. (Purchase tickets here).

NJAC was kind enough to program two new piano pieces by yours truly: the program notes are below.

Gloss on Guston is a brief piece for solo piano. After hearing a playthrough of the work, a colleague recently quipped, “You’ve fit all the notes of Feldman’s For Philip Guston into one minute!” Indeed, there are many more notes per bar in this piece than in Feldman’s lengthy meditation of contemplative pointillism on Guston’s artworks: with good reason. Feldman’s music regards earlier pieces by Guston – his program note indicates paintings from 1949 and 1950 were the impetus for his reliquary to his abstract expressionist painter friend. My work is a response to a late painting by Guston – Untitled #142 (1979) – which resides in the Montclair Art Museum’s collection. Its vivid colors and angular shapes suggest to me busy athleticism and even, at times, motoric gestures, as well as a taut formal design. It was composed in 2012 in response to a commission from New Jersey Arts Collective and receives its world premiere today.

Fiery Sunset is a coda to my previous commission from New Jersey Arts Collective and the Montclair Art Museum: Innesscapes, a piece composed in 2008 that responds to the museum’s extraordinary collection of pieces by New Jersey landscape painter George Inness. It is scored for clarinet, viola, and piano. The first two instruments play the piece’s first movement, while all three instruments participate in movements two and three. After hearing the premiere, in order to balance the work I wanted to add a movement, one in which the piano gets a solo turn.

Fiery Sunset may be played by itself or as part of Innesscapes as a whole. It responds to Inness’s painting Sunset and is dedicated to local composer George Walker as a small gift acknowledging his ninetieth birthday on June 27, 2012. It also receives its world premiere today.

Iron Composer Competition Announcement

Iron Composer will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012. As always, there is no entry fee, and the competition is open to composers of all ages. The first prize is $500, and Iron Composer will be broadcast live on WCLV 104.9 FM, Cleveland’s classical radio station.

The entry deadline is June 23, and the five finalists will be selected by July 7. On the morning of the competition, the finalists will be assigned an instrumentation and a secret musical ingredient. They have just five hours to write a piece that incorporates both elements. Their work will be performed and judged on a free public concert.

“Aphorism” (Soundcloud demo)




With just a day to spare, I managed to get an entry into Hilary Hahn’s Encore Contest.

Congratulations to pianist Peter Poston for winning the David Lang 2011 Competition.

Poston will get to perform as part of an all Lang program at le poisson rouge in New York City on May 6, 2012 at 5pm. The concert at LPR includes Andrew Zolinsky performing selections from the CD, a new 4-hand piano work premiered by Zolinsky and Poston, a new 6-hand piano piece for the 3 runners-up – Catarina Domenici, Katherine Dowling, and Denise Fillion – and performances by guitar legend Derek Johnson and other special guests.

Cantaloupe Music CD

Wed, the audition piece for the David Lang 2011 Competition, is featured on This Was Written By Hand, David Lang’s latest CD, a recital disc recorded for Cantaloupe by pianist Andrew Zolinksy. It is one of eight “Memory Pieces” included on the disc. This group serves as postminimal “Characterstucke,” an attractive and mercurial group of contrasting miniatures.

Then there is the touching title work. One of Lang’s most organically constructed pieces, it was, indeed, written by hand and intuitively constructed. A meditation on the ephemeral nature of life, it captures a similar poignancy to Lang’s recent vocal work “Little Matchgirl Passion,” but writ smaller, more intimately. To both this and the Memory Pieces, Zolinsky brings a fluid grace and subtlety that abets the spontaneous, almost improvisatory, character of the material.

Exploring the Metropolis Expands Residency Program

Exploring the Metropolis administers the Con Edison Composer Residency Program, a response to the challenges musicians face finding space to work in the ever more pricey environs of New York. The organization has just announced that it is expanding the program for its Spring 2011 residencies. They’ll be finding eight composers three month residencies at four different locations throughout the city (including the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn). This will allow them a space to work, an opportunity to present their music in a public program at the completion of their appointment, and a small stipend (This year it was $1000).

Thus far, Flushing Town Hall in Queens and Turtle Bay Music School in Midtown East Manhattan have been announced as spaces for next year’s residencies. Exploring the Metropolis suggests that interested composers sign up for their email list to get further details about the 2011 program as they are announced

Schwendingers on Playing it UNSafe


Laura and Leni Schwendinger, composer and lighting designer respectively, are featured this season on the American Composers Orchestra’s Playing it UNSafe program (3/4 at Zankel Hall in NYC).

Enter Hayes Biggs

We’re pleased to announce that Hayes Biggs has agreed to be our third jury member for the Sequenza 21/MNMP Call for Scores. Hayes is currently a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music. A composer, vocalist, writer, copyist, and former Associate Editor at Peters, he brings a wealth of experience to our judges’ table. We’re thrilled he’ll be a part of planning the program.

The contemporary classical music website Sequenza 21 (http://www.sequenza21.com), in partnership with Manhattan New Music Project (http://www.mnmp.org/), is pleased to issue a call for scores. Composers of any age may submit a single work with the following instrumentation: violins (2), viola, cello, piano, and percussion. Works for smaller groupings (solos, duos, trios, etc.) that employ the above instruments are especially welcome.  In the interest of performing as many entries as possible, pieces that are shorter in duration may be preferred.

Several pieces will be selected from these entries for our 2011 concert in New York City (date/location TBA), performed by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble – ACME (http://acmemusic.org). The program committee will include Christian Carey (Sequenza 21), Clarice Jensen (ACME), and another composer to be determined by the sponsors.

There is no entry fee. There is also no remuneration apart from the performance. Those composers selected for the concert will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations should they wish to attend the event.

Scores with CD recordings (if available) will be accepted at the address below until 5 PM on Monday, January 31, 2011. Please do not send parts at this time. Materials will be returned if accompanied by an SASE with appropriate postage.
