Yesterday on SoundCheck, Portland Cello Project covered one of the songs from Beck’s soon to be released sheet music collection Song Reader. Wonder who else will be covering these notated but as yet unrecorded songs? Could a “File Under Beck” rendition be forthcoming?
On Wednesday, I talked to Chris Thile about recently being awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Thile is currently on tour with Punch Brothers. Look for the article here later this week. In the meantime, here are Punch Brothers covering Radiohead!
Soul’s singular songstress Betty LaVette is releasing another album of rock covers via Anti this Fall. A teaser track, a rendition of the Black Keys’ “I’m Not the One,” is shared via the imprint’s SoundCloud page.
J Mascis releases a new 7″ single on 11/22 via Sub Pop. The A-side is a cover of Edie Brickell’s “Circle.” The B-side, which you can hear via a Soundcloud embed below, is a Mascis original: “I’ve been Thinking.”
The AV Club’s Undercover 2011, a series of cover songs by up and coming indie artists and alternative stalwarts, has been a bit hit or miss, but Sharon Van Etten’s slowcore alt-folk rendition of “She Drives Me Crazy” originally made famous by the Fine Young Cannibals, is a memorable standout. One of the things I love about Sharon’s cover renditions: she never shirks from completely re-conceiving a song to make it her own. For the music nerd in me, it’s also fun that they lower the key by a fifth and there’s a corresponding downshift in tempo.
