Best of 2012: Conrad Schnitzler’s Endtime

Many of us avoid preparing for our own “endtime.” But Conrad Schnitzler, who passed away in 2011, made sure that his last work, “Endtime,” counted. The CD (out on M-Minimal) surveys his forty-plus years of electronic music making with a single 70-minute mix comprised of 36 selections. Those not familiar with Schnitzler’s important contributions to krautrock and experimental electronica are likely to be blown away. For fans it will be a bittersweet but rewarding valediction from a talented, imaginative, and musically adventurous spirit.

Friday: Nono CD Release Party

Miranda Cuckson and Christopher Burns originally planned to celebrate the release of their latest CD, a recording of Luigi Nono’s “la lontananza nostalgica utopica futura” back in November. After Storm Sandy, the formal release was pushed back to January. In the interim, the NY Times named it one of 2012′s best CDs and we added an excerpt of the recording to our “Favorite Things 2012″ Mix.

Tonight, at long last, Miranda and Chris get to properly celebrate the Nono disc, performing it tonight (Friday) and Saturday at Spectrum. In addition, listeners will get to hear a demonstration of the 5.1 surround version of the recording and another work by Burns. Details below.

Friday: Annie Gosfield at Moving Sounds Festival

From tonight until Saturday, the Austrian Cultural Forum sponsored Moving Sounds Festival takes place. Thursday saw the Mivos Quartet perform new works by Carl Bettendorf and Reiko Füting while Christian Meyer and Franz Hackl gave a lecture recital entitled “Schoenberg and the notion of Avant-garde.”

On Friday, composer Annie Gosfield appears in a portrait concert at the Czech Center as part of Moving sounds. It includes the premiere of “Phantom Shakedown”. The piece for piano accompanied by a broken shortwave radio, a cement mixer, and tube noise. It’s one of the pieces on Gosfield’s latest CD, the just released Almost Truths and Open Deceptions (Tzadik). Dynamic and captivating, both the concert and  CD embrace amplified industrial music and distressed chamber works, in a concoction that balances sonic seduction with formidable avant gauntlets.

Happy 80th Birthday Pauline Oliveros

Best wishes to Pauline Oliveros, who turned eighty today!

Important Records has just released a generous sized acknowledgment of Oliveros’ wide ranging influence and imaginative experimental creations: a 12 CD boxed set that is the completest compilation to date of her early electroacoustic music. I’ve only just begun to dig in to a digital version of the set – but can already attest that it is heady and mind-opening stuff!

A sampler’s paradise and a vivid musical time capsule, Lixiviation is a compilation of analog synth guru Suzanne Ciani’s commercial work, as well as studio and live excerpts, from 1969-1985. It includes numerous clips for Atari, TV commercial spots (with clients ranging from Coca-Cola to PBS), a clip from a live concert using Buchla gear in 1975, and excerpts from her contributions to film scores (including the title track, a collaboration with mercury sculptor Ronald Mallory).

The versatility of projects represented is matched by  versatility of sonic approaches. Indeed, it’s interesting to hear such a wide chronological swath of the synthesist’s work. A decade and a half, particularly in these relatively early days of the development of synthesizer technology, encompasses multiple generations of gear; as well as, for Ciani, a significant evolution of aesthetic orientation and artistic approach. The general move is from a more ambient, slowly evolving, and improvisatory approach to leaner, tauter structures (as befits working within the constraints of corporate project time frames). The CD makes apparent the debt owed to Ciani by new age, bleep, glitch, sci-fi scores, ambient electronica, and those spearheading today’s analog synth revival.

A (small) caveat: Lixiviation is not curated from a chronological vantage point: its tracks are arranged somewhat more whimsically, perhaps to demonstrate the diversity of approaches adopted by Ciani. Nor are all the tracks precisely dated in the liner notes. Those looking for more a accurate provenance for some of the music will have to do a bit of web sleuthing (in the name of pop musicology) on their own.

Brand New Ensemble … Newish Venue … New Music

Tonight, Hotel Elefant makes its debut concert at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music (a venue that’s just celebrated its one-year anniversary). The concert features two works by David T. Little. Sequenza 21′s own James Holt will be on hand to host the event; he’ll conduct an onstage interview with Little.
