Tonight at 6:30 PM, Phil Kline’sdreamcitynine, a new work for smartphone wielders and 60 percussionists playing a quiet accompaniment, will be premiered at the North (Hearst) Plaza of Lincoln Center in NYC. The work’s title is an anagram of the word ‘indeterminacy;’ appropriately, it is a Lincoln Center Dut of Doors commission to celebrate the Cage centenary.
The source material consists of sixty one-minute long stories, told by a range of artists, from Kline to Philip Glass to Andrei Codrescu. You can hear and download them via Q2 here.

One of the keenly anticipated adventurous music releases of Summer 2012, Ancient Future, the latest collaboration of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christopher Willits, sees its physical release via the Ghostly imprint on August 6th in the EU/UK and August 7th everywhere else.

Dynamic instrumental music replete with warm synths as a pervasive grounding, long spun drones, field recorded additions, notably cawing gulls, and finally, surging crescendos and Mellotron-like strings pushing the levels higher towards red. If the old saw about ambient music is that it is dull or, at the very least, useful only as background listening on a yoga mat, Daw Nusk proves it wrong. Luxuriating in sound need never be a static experience and, on Hunter Gatherer it is quite the contrary; a pleasing aural journey that is nevertheless filled with a number of surprises and shifts of demeanor along the way. A generous collection of six compositions: recommended.

“Between April 26th-28th 2012, twenty-five musicians from around the U.S. and the world gathered at the music-sharing website known as ImprovFriday.com. The suggested theme for our sharing was simply “ppp;” i.e., the music term for “extremely soft and quiet.” How each person interpreted this in their own performance was left to them. This CD documents mash-ups I made during the course of the weekend event, of all the different tracks coming in to the site from these musicians. Some tracks were heavily edited, but most were left close to their original state, and simply allowed to interact with the other tracks in an unforced way.”

Chris Carter & Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle) and Nik Void (Factory Floor) created Transverse for the Short Circuit presents Mute festival at the Roundhouse, London in 2011. Rehearsing and preparing these tracks in the studio, they then performed them live (and live to tape) at the Roundhouse. The results are head turning and head-spinning, with many complexly hued textures that prove a revelatory exhibition of sonic timbres. Tutti’s singing is often treated as one instrument in the midst of many, rather than the conveyor of narrative or explicit sentiment. Void’s guitar work is also unconventional; he contributes bowed passages and grittily sinewed strata that combine with Carter’s musicking into a welter of drones.
Transverse explores the continuum between noise based improvisation and more rhythmically articulated and pitch-inflected music-making. Carter Tutti Void make avant-electronica at its most exultant and the results here are a jubilant clangor that ups the ante for acts – both analog and digital – to follow.

For a two day marathon of one-take recordings, Brooklyn/Atlanta electronic musician RJ Valeo joined bandmates Justin Gibbon and Justin Miller at SINergy Art Space, a 4000 square foot loft in Philadelphia. The result of their efforts is a cassette filled with reverberant soundscapes, populated by resilient grooves with swaths of bleary, effects laden live electronics. The B-side inexorably pulls you away from the toe-tapping ambience of the earlier music into a lush and leisurely paced sound world. It is a visceral pullback into the exhaustion of an adrenaline dump, signifying the end of an action packed weekend of music-making.
I can’t decide whether I prefer the trio at the effusive beginning of the session or during its hazy winding down. Fortunately, I don’t have to decide: one can just flip the tape over and enjoy it all again.
