More information about Gilgamesh EP

Over at my BandCamp site, we’re offering “Gilgamesh EP,” which features Gilgamesh Suite for prepared piano and ensemble, for sale to benefit Locrian Chamber Players’s future activities. I’m doing this not to fund my own work, but as a thank you to the group for premiering the piece, and for their continued advocacy for a wide variety of contemporary composers. Locrian’s programming aesthetic is catholic, and the criterion crystal clear: pieces must be a decade or younger.

File Under ?’s Tumblr page has a stream of the first movement from the Suite.

Out today: Creepy Crawlies’ debut LP (MP3)

From Easter to spring cleaning, now is the season in which many of us thing about getting unburied. Not so the duo Creepy Crawlies: the title of their debut self-released full length recording is Get Buried! But as you can hear from the MP3 below (shared via our Tumblr blog), they sure to make getting buried sound appealing, with a winsome yet wall-of-sound brand of indie pop.

Get Buried

The album is out today: help these comely Californians get a leg up in the dog eat dog environment of the record business by supporting it!

2/1: Beiser and Ziegler Tango at LPR

Cellist Maya Beiser and pianist Pablo Ziegler appear at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday, February 1st at 7:30 (doors open at 6:30). They are performing Canyengue, the Soul of Tango, a program that features the works of Astor Piazzolla.

From 1978-’88, Ziegler was a member of Piazzolla’s band. His arrangements for cello and piano translate Piazzolla’s compositions, such as Libertango and Adíos Nonino, to a more intimate medium, but retain the genre’s vibrant spirit. The duo will also perform several pieces by Ziegler, and Beiser will take a solo turn, performing Osvaldo Golijov’s Mariel.

Below, hear a stream from File Under ?’s Tumblr page of the duo playing Fuga Y Misterio, a somewhat lesser known piece by Piazzolla, arranged by Ziegler.

“Fuga Y Misterio”

Le Poisson Rouge is located at 158 Bleecker Street (between Thompson and Sullivan), in the West Village, NYC.  Tickets are $15, available through the club’s website, www.lepoissonrouge.com, or call 212/505-FISH (3474).

Missy plays the Midwest

Victoire, a Brooklyn based quintet of female alt-classical performers, is currently doing a mini tour in the Midwest to support the impending September release of their album Cathedral City on New Amsterdam. Matt Marks and Mellissa Hughes are taking their show on the road, performing selections from Matt’s opera Little Death Vol. 1.

Missy Mazzoli and company have been kind enough to allow us to share the title track from the LP on File Under ?’s Tumblr here. The track combines vocalizing courtesy of Missy with skittering glitchy percussion and a somewhat jazzy harmonic background. Kind of like Julee Cruise meets BoaC on Steely Dan’s patio, sharing drinks with Matmos
