Not quibbling ... but engaging critics is a reponsibitity I take dearly. Very happy to have any reviews given the fact Gramophone, The Wire, Alex Ross and many other "corporate" publications have no interest in reviewing such a "daring" release, on all levels. But, I am curious to find out what type of "stool" Evan was referring to ... :)

Guys, let's not quibble with the reviewer, shall we? Evan, as far as I know, is not a big fan of postminimalism, nor have we agreed that often in this forum. So I'm delighted that he seemed to find something positive in mf and the DVD as a whole. And he devoted an entire paragraph to each work---very nice!

"wow, listen to this weird interval?" in regard to David Beardsley's very important and moving microtonal work for string quartet is almost as good as ARG's "32, 23, 6, 26" in regard to some of the first recordings of Cage's most sublime Number Pieces we released back in 2000. I am just happy to get reviews and can laugh at some of them as well ... no big deal ... it takes time for people to hear things.

Thanks for a well-written review Evan. I consider it a major difference ... a piece in 3 movements as compared with a piece in 1 or 2 movements, even if all those movements are the same ... not only in terms of a piece's effect as a whole experience, but also how movement order changes this as well. This discussion might be carried on in the composers forum ...

Evan, there was only so much room for liner notes so I couldn't get into issues of notation, but I can tell you that the Feldman is notated in standard fashion, although there are a few idiosyncrasies (as with many of his scores) in terms of how to interpret the grace notes. Otherwise, it's pretty routine stuff vis a vis notation.

Glad you liked John's piece as much as I do.
