With Conductors Like This…

…Who needs an aerobic DVD? The clip title is roughly “Maraca Driven Crazy”, but I don’t think that’s the only thing coming unhinged here. Though this was posted around a year ago, I can’t help feeling that somewhere in Italy they’re still running through this phrase, over and over… (The piece rehearsed is Reich, but I’m not sure which piece; help, anyone?) Thanks to my wonderful cellist pal Francesco Dillon for the tip to the clip.

It’s Tehillim, isn’t it? First movement, I think, second section, where the organs come in with the voices.

That’s what I was thinking, but just wasn’t sure without the other parts surrounding it. Thanks!

Yup, definitely Tehillim, but I’ve never heard it sound…quite…like…this

Oy!

Well, that part of Tehillim explains the maracas, at least, although I wonder why the conductor has them–shouldn’t he be beating the little triangle 3s and trying to coordinate all those ridiculously close canons at that point in the movement?
