There is a sizable chunk of current culture that discourages concentration, focus, devotion. Instead, it encourages the ability to shift gears instantly. I’m all in support of this Attention-Deficit-Disorder society – I think it brings a number of interesting new perspectives into our cultural discourse. But I find it difficult to engage in myself.

My shortcoming was recently clarified in reading about ornithologist Pamela Rasmussen, who has diagnosed herself with Attention Surplus Disorder. I love the idea, but I prefer to adjust it to Attention Surplus Syndrome – the acronym suits me better.
