East Anglia 1953 - New Orleans 2005
Brittens church parable Curlew Riverwas premiered in 1964 in Orford Church, Suffolk, on the East Anglian coast (the image to the right is from the original production). Eleven years earlier, on the night of 31st January 1953, Suffolk, and the whole of East Anglia, had suffered one of the worst floods in living memory, and one of the biggest environmental disasters ever to have occurred in the UK.
As we struggle to absorb the enormity of the New Orleans tragedy On An Overgrown Path reflects on the 1953 disaster. And highlights some lessons that may have been lost over the intervening years.
